“Meitheal” is the Irish word for a work-team and was the co-operative labour system in rural Ireland. Gardening can be solitary and occasionally involves heavy work that may be too much for one person. The club will act as organisation point for members who may wish to form meitheals to facilitate a more social form of gardening & to help each other in turn, with heavier garden tasks. Members who give up their work to others will do so on the understanding that they will be helped, in turn. Meitheals will normally be organized to take place at weekends. Unless by other mutual agreement, they will involve not more than two hour’s work by the volunteers. There will also be a social dimension and the “host” will be expected to provide some light refreshments/food for volunteers. The host will owe each of their volunteers the same number of hours.
